Manchester United’s first summer signing?
Despite the recent progress of young Spaniard David De Gea, in between the sticks at Manchester United, rumours are still rife that another high profile keeper will be brought to Old Trafford in the summer.
The Telegraph suggests that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants to bring in another top keeper, to ease the burden on his coltish £18m man and add competition for places, after the alarming demise of Anders Lindegaard. The Dane had a promising start to his career at Manchester United, but completely lost the plot in the 4-3 defeat of Reading in December, and has never recovered. He is rumoured to be heading out of the club at the end of the season, possibly to West Ham.
So Manchester United are going to need another keeper and Asmir Begovic, 25, is reportedly top of Fergie’s wishlist. The Stoke stopper has long been linked with United and the broadsheet reckons that, with other potential suitors lining up, the Bosnian beefcake could cost up to 20 million squid.
But if De Gea is to stay at Manchester United then would Begovic, an established first team player and full international, be happy to start next season as 2nd choice? With Arsenal also seemingly keen, he may prefer to head to a destination with guarantees of first team football. It also seems unlikely that Manchester United would shell out £40m on 2 keepers in 3 years. If there is any truth to this story, then perhaps De Gea will be on his way to Barcelona, to fill the boots of the ageing Victor Valdes.
De Gea possibly has greater potential than Begovic but is still a work in progress. The Bosnian, meanwhile, already looks like the finished article – a commanding presence in his area with great hands and shot stopping prowess. He makes himself the size of a hoose as Andy Gray might say.
So who would you rather have between the sticks at Old Trafford? De Gea or Begovic?
