Liverpool Update: Gerrard, Suso, Ayew and Villa
There is rarely a dull moment at Liverpool and the current news cycle hasn’t failed to disappoint.
In his autobiography, Steven Gerrard mentions former team mate, El-Hadji Diouf :
‘I wasn’t Diouf’s number one fan. Being around Melwood and Anfield I knew which players were hungry, which players had Liverpool at heart. Diouf was just interested in himself.’
Diouf has responded angrily by telling L’Equippe:
‘I respect him as a footballer, but there is no one more selfish than he is. He prefers that Liverpool loses and he scores.’
In transfer news, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is quoted on Liverpoolfc.com as saying:
‘It will always be the case that I’ll be able to bring in the players of my choice. Obviously there’ll be money available to do that in January.’
With Fabio Borini out for months, Liverpool fans will be expecting to see striking reinforcements. Talksport is linking The Reds with an exciting move for David Villa, who seems to have fallen down the pecking order at Barca since his long lay off. At 30, he may fancy new pastures and his contract expires in 2014 so he may not cost the earth to procure.
Various outlets also continue to link Marseille forward Andre Ayew to Liverpool. The 22 year old, who hasn’t been prolific in front of goal, but can play in a number of positions and has responded to the speculation by saying:
‘If the club has decisions to make and want to sell, we will have to get together and discuss the matter.’ ….’However, I am happy here, and completely focused on doing well with Marseille.’
In matters closer to home, Suso is about to sign a new contract with the club after breaking into the first team this season. The Daily Mail says that he could sign the long term deal before the weekend. With Borini crocked Suso should certainly see some minutes before the transfer window.
Liverpool host Reading this weekend and will be desperate for 3 points after a rocky start to the season. Despite their striker shortage we think that Liverpool will bundle over the line and so your money should be safe with William Hill at 2/5.
